Search on a Line by Byzantine Robots

چکیده
We consider the problem of fault-tolerant parallel search on an infinite line by n robots. Starting from the origin, the robots are required to find a target at an unknown location. The robots can move with maximum speed 1 and can communicate in wireless mode among themselves. However, among the n robots, there are f robots that exhibit byzantine faults. A faulty robot can fail to report the target even after reaching it, or it can make malicious claims about having found the target when in fact it has not. Given the presence of such faulty robots, the search for the target can only be concluded when the non-faulty robots have sufficient verification that the target has been found. We aim to design algorithms that minimize the value of Sd(n, f), the time to find a target at a distance d from the origin by n robots among which f are faulty. We give several different algorithms whose running time depends on the ratio f/n, the density of faulty robots, and also prove lower bounds. Our algorithms are optimal for some densities of faulty robots. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.1.2 Modes of Computation, Parallelism and concurrency, B.8 Performance and Reliability, F.2.2 Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems

Rendezvous on a Line by Location-Aware Robots Despite the Presence of Byzantine Faults
A set of mobile robots is placed at points of an infinite line. The robots are equipped with GPS devices and they may communicate their positions on the line to a central authority. The collection contains an unknown subset of “spies”, i.e., byzantine robots, which are indistinguishable from the non-faulty ones. The set of the non-faulty robots need to rendezvous in the shortest possible time i...
متن کاملEvacuation from a Disc in the Presence of a Faulty Robot
We consider the evacuation problem on a circle for three robots, at most one of which is faulty. The three robots search for an exit placed at an unknown location on the perimeter of the circle. During the search, robots can communicate wirelessly at any distance. The goal is to minimize the time that the latest non-faulty robot reaches the exit. Our main contributions are two intuitive evacuat...
متن کاملLower Bounds for Searching Robots, some Faulty
Suppose we are sending out k robots from 0 to search the real line at constant speed (with turns) to find a target at an unknown location; f of the robots are faulty, meaning that they fail to report the target although visiting its location (called crash type). The goal is to find the target in time at most λ|d|, if the target is located at d, |d| ≥ 1, for λ as small as possible. We show that ...
متن کاملPseudo-Kufi: Reflection of the Islamic Art in the Byzantine Art
Calligraphy was very important from the beginning in Islamic civilization because of the Rasm of the Holy Quran. The presence and application of the Kufic script, as one of the most common forms of calligraphy in the early Islamic age, with its own visual and conceptual features in the Greek churches and monasteries of the tenth and eleventh centuries (fourth and fifth centuries (AH)) raises ma...
متن کاملOptimal Byzantine Resilient Convergence in Asynchronous Robots Networks
We propose the first deterministic algorithm that tolerates up to f byzantine faults in 3f + 1-sized networks and performs in the asynchronous CORDA model. Our solution matches the previously established lower bound for the semi-synchronous ATOM model on the number of tolerated Byzantine robots. Our algorithm works under bounded scheduling assumptions for oblivious robots moving in a uni-dimens...
